Myitkyina, Kachin State

Kachin State is where the Northern tip of Myanmar and highest peak Mt. Hkaka-bo Razi are situated. River Irrawaddy has its sources and birth in this region. It offers gold and gemstones to the delight of the world. Southerly of the State are dense tropical forests and gradually changed to cold-temperate Himalayan environment up North.

  • Myitkyina is the principal city of Kachin State. Air linked with Yangon, Mandalay, Bhamo, Putao and Khamti airports and Myitkyina also has railways line extended from Mandalay. Motor roads spread around linking with
    (1) Mandalay,
    (2) Pha-kant and Khamti to the west,
    (3) war time famous Stilwell Road to India that links with Ledo of Assam, India through Tanai and Namyung,
    (4) 221 miles (354 km) road to Putao (Fort Hertz) through Sumprabum at 131st mile (210 km),
    (5) China border town of Pang-wah by north-easterly road,
    (6) Bhamo (Banmaw) to the South where it branch out to Rubyland Mogok, China-border town of Muse  (and onward to Ruili and Kunming), and another China-border town of Lwei-jei.

  • Myitkyina can provide good accommodations and interesting tour sites nearby. Day trip to the confluence of Mai-kha and Mai-likha rivulets where they form River Irrawaddy; two nights excursion trip to Pha-kant Jade mines and the town itself present plenty sightseeing spots.

  • Putao (Port Hertz) lies 221 miles North of Myitkyina and it took 25 minutes by flight. For hiking and mountaineering at Mt. Hkaka-bo Razi or Mt. Phon-kan Razi, Putao would be the nearest town to base camp, gateway to the "Burma's Icy Mountains".

  • Pha-kant is at the West of Myitkyina, 80 miles away. It's a bustling quarry town where Jade miners' lives can be observed through excursion tour. Along the journey and a couple of nights stay at Hotel as normally arranged, a rare glimpse of precious land and wonderful sights can be experienced.

  • Inn-daw-gyi Lake is at SWW of Myitkyina, 107 miles by road. With 300 sq. miles (775 sq. km.) spread of water expanse the lake is one of the most unspoiled touring sites. Accommodations can be arranged at Lon-ton Village at lake side. There is a good chance of seeing migratory and residential waterfowls, rare species of fishes, aquatic biology, butterflies and insects. 3 days/ 2 nights trip from Myitkyina could be a fine tour.
